Pronouns: He/Him/His
Hometown: Moline, IL
Education: Undergraduate = University of Pittsburgh - BS - Neuroscience, History and Philosophy of Science (2015); Medical School = Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine - MD - (2020); Graduate School = Northwestern University - MA - Medical Humanities and Bioethics (2020)

Hobbies: Running, Swimming, Soccer.
About me: I grew up in an Illinois city along the Mississippi River, where I developed a love of running, swimming, and spending summers detasseling corn in the surrounding farms. In Pittsburgh, I grew to love learning the sciences alongside the philosophy of how one can come to understand science, a pursuit I continued in medical school as I studied bioethics and the medical humanities alongside my medical studies. I found General Surgery to be at the perfect intersection of general medical knowledge, surgical knowledge with the ability to directly intervene and cure, and the nidus for a unique and special doctor-patient relationship. I love listening to all genres of music (but am partial to alternative rock), I enjoy competition in all forms, whether it's a board game or a pick-up game of soccer, and I'm always up for a trip to Buffalo Wild Wings.

Caleb Spainhower

Caleb Spainhower, MD

Medical School: Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University

Hometown: Raceland, KY
Undergraduate: Marshall University - Bachelors of Science with Major in Biology, Minor in Chemistry (2017)
Graduate School: Marshall University - MS - Biomedical Sciences (2019)
Area of Interest: Acute Care Surgery, Trauma
Why CAMC: CAMC is truly the perfect definition of what a hybrid program is about. You get the early operative experience and autonomy of a community center and the research opportunities of an academic center. I rotated here as a medical student and was in awe of the relationship between the residents and attendings. Everyone here is truly a family that strives to see each other grow individually and collectively as a group. The patient population here is also one of the vast pathology, providing the optima environment for surgeons to grow in a holistic approach treating patients medicinally and surgically. It is the best of both worlds at CAMC.
About me: I grew up in the small town of Raceland, KY. I always thought growing up I would either play for the Cincinnati Reds or pursue medicine and become a physician. Needless to say, the nerd in me won that battle when the man that taught me how to throw my first curveball passes away from pancreatic cancer, my grandfather, Jack. It was also thought this connection and witnessing my first whipple that I knew that my future was set out to be a surgeon, to make a difference. My goal is to be able to provide the best all-around care as possible, both medicinally and surgically and become a "Jack of all trades." Despite the years that have gone by, I'm truly a kid at heart where you can still catch me playing Pokémon to reciting SpongeBob quotes. Outside of work you can easily find me out on a run or a the gym, where I have spent the last several years before residency as a weight loss coach as well as a bodybuilding coach. I'm a big fanatic of music. Whether I'm listening to any form of rock or Christian music or even simply jamming out on the drum set or piano. Finally, I will always have a soft spot for any puppy I see.

Medical School: West Virginia University School of Medicine

Hometown: Bandung, Indonesia
Pronouns: She/Her
Area of Interest: Undecided, general surgery

And as for my pets—they're definitely cooler than yours! In fact, you can find one of their portraits proudly hanging in the hospital. When it comes to food, I'm convinced that Indomie reigns supreme as the best instant noodle out there, and nothing compares to a comforting bowl of soto ayam or rawon.
