The CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine has launched a five-year plan to expand its Graduate Medical Education programs in response to West Virginia's growing need for new physicians. The state faces an aging physician workforce, and the need is particularly high in the multiple disciplines that care for critically ill hospitalized patients.
To address this issue, the Institute announced a new Critical Care Medicine Fellowship starting July 2025. The Institute also shared that, in the summer of 2026, it will introduce a Surgery Critical Care Fellowship aimed at training surgeons for critically ill surgical patients.
These fellowships complement the existing Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship, enhancing training opportunities for the next generation of physicians and ensuring that West Virginians have continued access to high-quality, comprehensive critical care.
To further enhance care for its population, the Institute also received initial accreditation for the first Emergency Medical Services Fellowship in West Virginia.
