Mission Statement
The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program will support CAMC’s rich history of providing nationally recognized, high-quality, state-of-the-art cardiovascular care to the patients we serve in Southern WV while preparing fellows for clinical or academic practice. The program strives to enhance the academic patient care culture in a clinical learning environment that values professionalism, evidence-based care models, multidiscipline teams, research, collegiality, diversity, innovation, compassion, and strong core values.
Program Aims
- Provide guideline-based interventional recommendations and state-of-the-art interventional procedural experience needed to provide high quality, cost-effective, autonomous care for an array of cardiovascular diseases, including but not limited to: coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and structural heart disease.
- Develop the fellow’s skills in outpatient and inpatient evaluation of early disease diagnosis, preventive guideline-based medical therapy, appropriate and rapid interventional options such as percutaneous angioplasty/stent, appropriate surgical referral, appropriate use of mechanical circulatory support (Left ventricular support such a Impella and ECMO), and timely follow up.
- Ensure that the fellow acquires the skills to diagnose complex interventional cardiovascular conditions and initiate rapid and appropriate treatment that can be lifesaving and improve quality of lives; encourage and expect the fellow to learn management of cardiogenic shock, principles of right heart catheterization and management of devices to support left and right ventricle.
- Educate the fellow on the fundamentals of quality initiatives, health care disparities, and clinical research, by providing the necessary resources and support to learn, gather data, and publish studies. The fellow will be able to effectively apply this knowledge to patient care and/or pursue an academic career.
- Foster and cultivate the core values of integrity, ethical behavior, compassion, kindness and professionalism in both faculty and fellows to complement the CAMC mission of “striving to provide the best health care to every patient, every day”.
- Prepare the fellow to be a mentor to others, a leader in the region and, in the case of a gifted fellow, cultivate leadership skills on a national and international level.
