Welcome to the Charleston Area Medical Center Neurology Residency Program! This program admitted its first inaugural classes in July 2023. CAMC will graduate its first graduating neurology cohort in 2026!

The Charleston Area Medical Center Neurology Residency is under the umbrella of the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine (IAM). The IAM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as a sponsoring institution of 19 ACGME accredited residency and fellowship programs, with over 180 current residents and fellows.

CAMC is a 956-bed hospital located in Charleston, West Virginia and is the largest distinct health care provider in the state of West Virginia. With a primary and secondary service area of more than 22 counties serving more than 550,000 people, CAMC is the major tertiary care and referral center in southern West Virginia.

Comprehensive Clinical Training

The CAMC neurology residency program blends intensive clinical training with protected time for didactic lectures and individual study time. These components allow the resident to establish a strong knowledge base and marry this to the practice of clinical neurology.

Training Environment

In 2021, CAMC recorded more than 107,000 emergency room visits and 682,000 outpatient visits. The neurology department performed more than 3,000 consultations in 2021.

Research Opportunities

Research is a valuable opportunity during residency. Exposure to and participation in research within the field of Neurology allows the resident to “see” the future of neurology and how changes in knowledge and data driven change in practice will impact the performance of neurology and patient outcomes.

CAMC has a dedicated research department, and the neurology department has its own research coordinator. There are both investigator driven and industry research project opportunities available to residents.

Research Day is held every year, and residents are expected to have at least one presentation yearly. In 2024, all three residents projects were accepted for poster presentation.

The American Academy of Neurology also welcomes resident research in the form of case reports and poster presentations. Faculty mentoring is provided for residents with an interest in research, and research elective months are available.
